All Your Questions Answered on What to Do When Your Car Gets Towed

Knowing what to do when your car gets towed in the first couple of hours can make or break your wallet. Towing vehicles is a multi-million dollar business. Don’t think for a second to park your car illegally. I have had my fair share of my vehicle being towed multiple times. I learned quickly that I should be aware of my surroundings when parking.

Where did you park? That’s the first thing that you should be asking your self after finding out that your vehicle is no longer where you left it. Look for signs that support the reason for being towed.

If necessary take pictures of the sign that says you will be towed if you park illegally. If you parked there you will just have to eat the cost of the bill and pay close attention next time.

What are possible reasons for my car to be towed?

  • Stolen
  • Embezzled
  • Unregistered
  • Abandoned
  • Violation of city zoning codes/ordinances
  • Unlicensed driver
  • Driver with suspended or revoked license
  • A vehicle used in the commission of a crime: drunk driving, hit and run, reckless driving, other crimes such as robbery

How much does it cost when your car gets towed?

When your car gets towed it can add up really fast. These two companies have all types of incurred cost. Here is an example of what type of cost you may be facing. Every state and city is different, this is just an example.

For example, charges $60 for local towing, a $75 hook-up fee and $3.50 per mile for long-distance towing. A tow of five miles or less may cost $35 to $125, while a 40-mile tow could cost $125 to $275,

How to find your car after it was towed

After your car gets towed it can be almost impossible to find it. There are a few things that you can do to find it fast to not incur more cost for your vehicle sitting in the tow yards for too long.

You can call the non-emergency number in your town and they can most likely pull up your car in the database.

Another avenue for finding your vehicle fast is to use a Towed Vehicle Locator

What if I don’t pick up my car?

I don’t see why you would want to not pick up your vehicle. If you wait too long and your vehicle is really really old and in really bad shape cost to pick it up is more than what the car is worth, I guess that’s one reason to not pick it up.

If you do not pick up your vehicle, the tow yard has every right by law to place a lien on the title. The will request the title from the state, get the title and then sell it to get money back from the incurred tow cost and plus profits from the sale of your vehicle.

What paper work is needed to pick up a car from tow yard?

State Id or drivers license

College ID or government ID

Car title: If you can not find the car title here is how to get a car title in 24 hrs.

What if I don’t have my ID Can I still pick up my car?

Yes, you can pick up your car, but it will be more difficult. If you own your vehicle outright and have a co-owner on the tile, you can use the co owner’s information to get the vehicle back.
