Mastering The Art Of Parallel Parking

As an avid motorist, and a racing enthusiast I have been around my fair share of cars, and hence over the years I have gotten to know a lot about them.

In my teenage years, my dad (God bless his soul) taught me how to drive, and he would lose his top, every time I parked the wrong way.

It took a lot of practice and my father’s cursing for me to finally learn how to do proper parallel parking.

The other day I was at City Lift parking, and I saw a teenager following his father’s instructions while parking, and hence I decided to write a detailed step by step parking instruction in memory of the man who would blow his head off every time I missed a step while parking.

A Suitable Space

Find a space where you have no chance of hitting any car. Make sure the space is at the very least an inch longer than your car.

The Parking Place

Observe the place where you want to park your car. Is it at somebody’s entrance or is it blocking a fire hydrant? If the answer is yes then you need to find another place to park.

Claim the Perfect Parking Space

When you find the perfect parking place, slow down and examine it really carefully. Once satisfied that you can park here with considerable ease.

Pull up to the car in the front, and then check your rear view mirror if any another vehicle is close by.

Then gently reverse into the open space while maintaining a 90-degree angle and watching the sides of your car, so that you don’t hit the other vehicle.

As soon as you are near the curb start straightening your car. It’s a good idea if you have a passenger with you, to let him assist in the parking of your car, especially when you are parking in tight spaces.

In Case Of a Mistake:

If at any point you feel like you have made a bit of a blunder straighten your car and pull out as gently as possible.  Once you have straightened your car try again, this time make sure that you have kept some distance between you and the front parked car.

Parked Properly

Open your door after examining the other side of the door, you don’t want to be hit by a fellow motorist, and hence it is better to take precaution.
